ROWLAND, Austen
STRENGTHS: Old-fashioned point-guard. Team-first player with decent body structure. Good athlete that can change pace off the dribble. Disciplined when organising the plays, he can push the ball up court on the break or slow things down. His main quality is his passing ability: the timing is excellent. He can fool the double team on the Pick & Rolls and drive to score runners.
WEAKNESSES: He does not have much talent and scores very few points. Decent athlete but he lacks energy, he seems to hold back on court to save his energy. When he has to stop doing his routine work on offense, he tends to struggle and show little quality. Playground style, sometimes over confident, leading to turnovers. Average three-point shooter, not a threat with drives (percentages?).
CAREER: From Maryland, he first played college ball at Delaware and then, in his senior year, at Lenigh, where he had a splendid season (15.5ppg, 4.2rpg, 4.9apg). He was MVP of the conference. Once out of college, he went to Germany’s second division, first at Kaiserslautern (21.9ppg, 5.3apg) and then at Basket Jena. Amongst the top assist men in Germany for three years from 2006 to 2010. Had a spell in Austria and signed in French second division in summer 2010.
EVALUATION: Not much talent, questionable style but he plays with his heart. He does a good job of encouraging his teammates. He does what was once required of the point-guard: he works for the team and set the right tempo. He doesn’t have much quality and on offense he struggles to be productive at a high level. A player that can build the plays on average teams.
