Scoonie PENN
PENN, Scoonie
STRENGTHS: Talented scoring point-guard. A leader, he can take over on offense. One of the best in Europe playing the Pick & Roll. He can score from three, hit the pull up jumper or drive in traffic. Physically compact, ultra-quick. Top class dribbling ability. He has court vision, he makes the defense work and finds the open teammate with kick outs. WEAKNESSES: He only knows one way to express his basketball. He loves to handle the ball and create from Pick & Rolls. He’s not as effective trying to give fluidity to the offense, he loses efficiency building the plays and also as a scorer. He’s a better three-point shooter off the dribble than when open. Percentages can waver. CAREER: A great player at college level, especially in his last two seasons with Ohio State when he was voted MVP of the prestigious Big Ten conference and led the Buckeyes to the NCAA Final Four. Second round pick in the NBA draft, he struggled in his debut in Italy and decided to play in the NBDL and then in Serbia. He had his breakthrough year in Belgrade, then he played with many teams reaching his peak with Cibona. Earned a call from Olympiacos (twice), did not shine, at Efes either. Then, the decline. EVALUATION: An atypical point-guard, tough to fit in tactically. He did extremely well at Cibona (and at Ohio State in the past) when he was handed the key of the team and could do what he knows best. In other situations, he found it a lot more difficult, and his spell at Olympiacos is a testimony of this. A star in average or top level team but not a point-guard for the very best of European basketball.
