Gregory Grays
GRAYS, Greg
STRENGTHS: Guard. He can play as a point-guard but he’s at his best as a 2 with the freedom to operate. He can score points and without forcing anything. No-nonsense player, he rarely makes any mistakes. Good mentality, he likes to pass the ball and does it well. He can hit the three when he has space. Good changes of pace to drive. He can hit the pull-up jumper from the line. Low center of gravity. WEAKNESSES: He’s short to play as a 2 at the top level. As a point-guard, he is disciplined but not very creative. When he works for the others, he tends to be less effective as a scorer. He’s not an explosive athlete, he always plays at the same speed. He lacks energy and concentration on defense. Slow shooting release, he needs time and he’s better from kick-outs than off the dribble. CAREER: He came out of Detroit, where he had an excellent senior season (18ppg) but without big credentials. He had to start from low-level leagues. Signed by Banvit, in the Turkish second division, he played there a few months before moving to the US minors. Had a stint in Venezuela as well. Performed extremely well on the offensive end with Ankara, Russia, for two seasons. Good numbers wherever he went (Ankara, Charleroi, Beykospor), surprise signing in France’s second division in 2009-10. EVALUATION: He always put up excellent numbers but stats aside, he’s a player who fails to impress. First of all, he does not have a defined role. He has little quality as a point-guard and he’s not aggressive enough as a scoring guard. He plays with little intensity and is body language is suspect. A player for low-level European leagues.
