PENIGAR, Desmond
STRENGTHS: Forward with great offensive talent. A 3,5 that established himself as an atypical 4 in Europe. He can score a lot of points. He pushes the ball on the break, creates his own shot off the dribble, attacking the rim or hitting the pull up jumper. He gets open on the Pick & Rolls to score from the arc. Inventive, he’s an athlete that knows how to finish off inside and can play in 1-on-1 situations in the low post. Great belief in his ability.
WEAKNESSES: He’s had a tough times with injuries that made him lose his rhythm. Above all, he thinks about shooting. Suspect decision making. He needs to have maximum freedom on offense. Not physical, he’s not eager to defend on the inside 4. Not much of a presence inside his paint in terms of help defense and rebounds. Modest shot blocker. A pure finisher.
CAREER: One of the miracle products of the NBDL. He came out of college with good credentials (two times all-first team of his conference) but in his Utah State team, he did not have much publicity. He broke out in the NBDL (19.5ppg, 6.4rpg), where he was rookie of the year and all-first team of the league. He had a taste of the NBA, the money of the Korean league and had an injury that kept him out for a long spell. After two seasons in Germany, he spent two years in Austria filling the points and rebounds categories with good numbers.
EVALUATION: A great talent. He seemed ready to step up a level after some excellent seasons in the NBDL, but then he had some knee problems and had to start from scratch. In Germany, in a context not suited to his characteristics, he physically struggled against the opposite frontline players. He needs to score with regularity to be important.
