MATHIS, Donte
STRENGTHS: True point-guard, totally dedicated to his teammates, he’s organised and disciplined when running the plays. The coach has faith in him. He’s appreciated because he always has things under control, he can run a team and does not make mistakes. He’s not a vocal leader but he has personality and he takes responsibility. A threat with drives, good change of pace, he does well in the open court.
WEAKNESSES: He needs to play on a team with a rigid system, where he won’t have to create. Monochord style, he does not give much rhythm to the offense, and he needs to play alongside talented teammates. He needs to feel people have faith in him, otherwise he runs the risk of thinking too much his basketball and being predictable. Not a great athlete, average defender. Poor three-point shooter, and the opposite defense adapts on the Pick & Rolls.
CAREER: He came out of a little college, he had to gain experience to go up the ladder. Went first to the IBL, then in a small team of Germany. Even played in island, he also had a brief spell in Slovenia before arriving at Ragusa without drawing much attention. He did excellently in his debut. Very positive in his first Novara year in the Lega2, then a poor individual and collective season. Two average seasons at Monferrato before joining Udine in summer 2009. Still playing there.
EVALUATION: He settled in perfectly in Italy’s second division, after having wandered around some average and low-level leagues. He did very well when he was not under pressure, whereas he disappointed when more was expected of him. An excellent player on a rigid team, he lacks technique and athleticism to aim higher.
