Denis MARCONATO
MARCONATO, Denis
STRENGTHS: A tall and physical center with soft hands. Very intelligent player with experience. He does the little things that can turn around games. Has height and weight but runs the court very well and has good footwork. Agile on defense on 1-on-1 and does a good job of helping out. He’s solid and a menacing shot-blocker. On offence, has a descent mid-range jumper and he knows how to move to get open. Effective from the foul line. WEAKNESSES: He is not a young guy anymore and has consequently lost a bit of his physical attributes. However, he’s never been a true athlete as he has little leaping ability. On offence, he lacks moves with his back to the basket and prefers to shot from 3-4 meters. A solid team player but not a warrior. He has little physical impact on the games. CAREER: Came up with Benetton Treviso, had his first descent playing time in the Italian second division with Padova where he exploded. He quickly made his mark at international level with a splendid European championship in 1997. However, his improvement was hindered by many injury problems. Once he was fit again, he became a star of one of the best European teams in 2005-06: Barcelona. Stayed there three years. Fringe role at Siena in 2009-10. Signed for Cantù. EVALUATION: Has been one of the best European 5 over the last decade; with a little bit more of aggressiveness (and a few less injuries at the beginning of his career) he could have been a top class player eyeing the NBA. He has evidently passed his best, he hasn’t the presence any more to be the sole focal point of his team in the paint but if used adequately he’s still a very useful player.
