Jaka LAKOVIC
LAKOVIC, Jaka
STRENGTHS: He is a point-guard and a scorer at that. He’s prone to achieving big scoring streaks and change the course of the game thanks to his talent. Short, quick, he efficiently change pace and direction and does a good job of firing the pull up jumper. He’s one of the best shooters on the Pick & Rolls in Europe. Possesses an explosive first step which enables him to drive past his defender and he is not afraid to face the big guys inside. He loves to take the clutch shots, and he often downs them. WEAKNESSES: As a scoring point-guard, he struggled to run the plays. He tends to look first at the basket before thinking of his teammates. His shot selection and decision making remains his main weaknesses, even though he clearly improved under Zelimir Obradovic. He does not always make the right choice in crunch time. He is neither very big nor tall. CAREER: He started his career at Slovan but made a name for himself when he averaged over 20ppg with Krka in the Euroleague 2001-02. He moved to Panathinaikos and initially suffered from the pressure put on by coach Zelimir Obradovic but he improved a lot as time passed by and his two seasons in Europe from 2003 to 2005 (13.4ppg, then 15.1ppg) are a testimony of it. In Barcelona since 2006-07, his stats have declined in the past two years. EVALUATION: He has established himself as one of the best in Europe at his position, he has done extremely well in two different reality such as Panathinaikos and Barcelona. Some might not like his style but he is a big scorer, prone to big scoring outbursts. An NBA-level talent, there are concerns however about his mental toughness and his capacity to make the right decision in the clutch time.
