Alex MUMBRU
MUMBRU, Alex
STRENGTHS: A pure small forward. He’s tall and versatile and is an asset either inside or outside the paint. He’s got experience at the top level. Strong and powerful athlete. Knows how to attack in the spaces and can score off balance. He works the baseline and likes to run the floor. Excellent three-point shooter (good in the corners). Appreciated for he’s a true competitor and a humble guy. WEAKNESSES: He’s physically strong but has little body control. Tends to run head down with little change of pace or direction. He does not have a feeling for the game, has a low basketball IQ and he’s very emotional. Creates little off the dribble as his ball handling and passing skills are suspect. Has to work harder on defense and to help on rebounds. He has slow feet and struggles against quick opponents. CAREER: A late bloomer. He did not make it to the youth national teams and emerged late in Badalona. In his first season in 2000-01, he tallied double figures straight away, and even bettered that the next season. He moved to Real Madrid in 2002/03 but had little impact. After two years there, he went back to Badalona where he played extremely well, earning himself a call from the national team to go to Japan 2006 and a second spell at Madrid, a better one. In Bilbao since 2009. EVALUATION: Small forward of the World Champs. An important title on his résumé but be careful not to overestimate this player who his good but not a star. Tactically, he fits in well in important teams. He’s the size of a true 3 and can open the court thanks to his three-point shot. A competitor but a little inconsistent. Not a leader.
