Goran NIKOLIC
NIKOLIC, Goran
STRENGTHS: Frontline player with technique and excellent hands. He can play either the 4 or 5 position. He’s good at taking advantage of miss-matches on offense. His main quality is his intelligence. No-nonsense player with an excellent mid-range game, where he has a good shot. He can dribble (left hand) and pass the ball. WEAKNESSES: Lightweight, he is not used to the physical battles on defense. He lacks physical strength and has a stiff body. Athletically average, he can run the court but he lacks explosiveness and has slow feet. Inexistant vertical leap. On offense, he’s a tweener. He struggles to shoot in traffic. He needs cover on defense. CAREER: One of the many excellent players that came out of Zeleznik Belgrade. Had his breakthrough year in 2000-01 when he had a great season in the YUBA (14.1ppg, 6.7rpg) as well as in the Korac Cup (19.2ppg, 5.8rpg). From this moment on, he never ceased to improved and deservedly ended in the Euroleague with Efes Pilsen, Turkey, where he had two good seasons. Did well in the Uleb Cup in 2007-08 with Berlin, his last good season before his decline. Did Ok in 2009-10 in Mersin, Turkey, in 2009-10. EVALUATION: A good frontline player for important European leagues as long as he is not asked to be a star of the team. Excellent rotation player as he demonstrated at Efes. Appreciated for his no-nonsense game and his old-fashioned fundamentals. He has limited margin for improvement as he is physically and athletically weak.
