Simon PETROV
PETROV, Simon
STRENGTHS: True point-guard. He has the fundamentals for the position, good passing skills and court vision. He’s adept at setting the tempo. He does not make silly mistakes. Does well on the Pick & Roll, he scores points with drives. He can feed the big men or shoot from the arc, which constitutes his main weapon. He’s a threat from kick outs and pull up jumper. Can score points. WEAKNESSES: He has little personality and, over the years, he’s lost confidence. He struggles under the defensive pressure, he does not have the charisma of the leader. He can play on offense, but he needs to play at his tempo. When he starts off poorly he rarely has the mental to get back on track. He lacks athleticism, he’s neither quick nor explosive. He can’t drive past his man off the dribble and he finds it difficult on defense. CAREER: He came up very young with KRKA, he had several good seasons in Slovenia (12ppg in the Saporta Cup in 1999-00, 11ppg in the following Suproleague). He’s failed to meet the expectations, even when he played at Asvel, France. As the years went by, his playing time in the national team diminished and he ended up wander around Europe without giving much meaning to his basketball. Came home in 2007-08 with Geoplin Slovan and had two good seasons. In Novo Mesto since 2008-09. EVALUATION: He was considered a prospect at the start of his career but then, instead of improving, he worsened. He’s now a decent player for average or low level teams, useful as a pure point-guard because he can play the game and can still shoot from three. Cannot be asked to be a leader or increase the tempo of the game. A little disappointment even though the talent has not evaporated.
