OWENS, Chris
STRENGTHS: Excellent combinations of size and athleticism. A presence in both paints, powerful body, solid when contact occur. Does not get rooted out of position. He has explosiveness, coordination on the move and leaping ability. He takes full advantage of these qualities. Does well to finish off the kick outs and in dynamic situations. He’s aggressive on the rebounds and can block shots. Influential player.
WEAKNESSES: A true tweener. If he had a couple more inches he could be a perfect center. As a 4 he’s not enough of a threat from the perimeter. He can shoot from 13 feet but lacks consistency. He does not have three-point range and can’t drive in off the dribble. Suspect touch. He does not have a great feel for the game. Bad decision making, often finds himself in trouble. He creates very little from his teammates. He shoots just about every ball that comes his way.
CAREER: Had a great career in Texas before suffering a terrible injury that forced him out for a long spell. Signed by Trapani, after having only played one game in an NBA season, he had a splendid season in Italy’s second division, deserving a call at the top level. Very disappointing in the Spanish ACB with Granada. He did a lot better as a 5 in Panionios, Greece. Did fine in Berlin and Galatasaray and had big stats in Ukraine, at Donetsk. Disappointing on his return in Greece and went back to Ukraine.
EVALUATION: When he can play in the paint he’s an excellent player, capable of reaching double figures in points and rebounds. Life becomes a lot harder for him when he’s used as a 4. He neither has the technique nor the instinct for this position. The Spanish league was too much for him but he can do better in inferior leagues playing inside the paint.
