ALLEN, Derrick
STRENGTHS: He’s greatly improving. He worked hard to get up the ladder and it shows in the intensity with which he plays every possession. He’s lost weight and his athleticism got better. He runs and jumps with energy. Good mover inside, excellent footwork, he scores points thanks to a large array of moves. His three-point shooting is on the up. A factor on the boards. He plays with will.
WEAKNESSES: Limited talent. He has to keep working on his face-up game to become a true 4. For now he’s a tweener, he prefers to play in the low post, where he nonetheless struggles to finish off in traffic (leaping ability from a standstill, height?). Instincts and understanding of the game are average. He tends to charge head down, which lowers his percentages.
CAREER: He popped out of nowhere. He was a role player at Mississippi, where he never reached double figures. He even earned his first wages as a pro in Island, where he did well in the FIBA Cup (26.6ppg, 9.4rpg), earning a call from Germany. He spent two seasons at Kalsrhue, where he became a threat for double doubles and was amongst the top 5 in the scoring and rebounding chart. He stayed in Germany for years but playing in better teams all the time until he signed with Alba Berlin in summer 2010.
EVALUATION: A true competitor than improves year after year. He’s lost weight and his offensive impact has increased to a totally unexpected extent. He did not seem to have the talent nor the consistency from outside to emerge at a higher level but he proved that will and competitive spirit could make up for other weaknesses as he put up good numbers in European competitions in 2010-11.
