Billy KEYS
KEYS, Billy
STRENGTHS: Point-guard with experience of the European leagues. Used to be a player specialized in the open court, he did a good job of improving in running the team, becoming more solid and disciplined. Decent quickness, fast in narrow spaces, he has good ball-handling ability. Good execution of the Pick & Roll, he can create openings, feeding the big men or with drives and kick outs. A threat from the arc. WEAKNESSES: He has only two gears. When he plays for the team, he does not like to push the ball up court on the break, lacking creativity. On the other hand, when he has to score points, he tends to force the issue, taking too many risks, consequently leading to turnovers. Overall, he does not have much talent, be that as a scorer or as a pass-first point-guard. CAREER: Born in Chicago, he played in Northeastern, in his state, but then he had to move to New Mexico State to complete his NCAA career. After college, he went to the CBA before making his European debut with Hapoel, Israel (14ppg, 4apg). In 2003-04, he signed for Roseto but was cut. He came back to the CBA. He had a stint with Gran Canaria, Spain, in 2005-06 and in LEB: disappointing. Had his best moments, at least scoring, in Greece, where he stayed three years. EVALUATION: A player with limited talent, but who proved he could run teams in important leagues. He does not have the potential to be a star and he neither has the personality nor the quality to change the course of a game. However, he’s disciplined, has experience and can put his teammates in the rhythm. Old-fashioned point-guard, useful in rigid system, in which he does not have to improvise.
