MARTIN, Phil
STRENGTHS: Power forward who likes to play inside. Physically solid, he can play as a center too. Not flashy but effective, he gets the maximum out of his talent. Good around the basket, he possesses a few post-up moves, a threat with cuts. He goes well for the offensive rebounds. Solid 1-on-1 and help defender.
WEAKNESSES: Typical undersized big man, the game of a 5 and the body of a 4. He can’t shoot nor drive facing up, he’s not a threat outside the paint. He lacks a bit of vertical explosiveness, he’s an average defensive rebounder. Not creative, when he’s forced out of his routine, he struggles to be productive.
CAREER: Canadian with Italian origins. Born in Ontario, he played high school in Canada before playing NCAA basketball at Hawaii, where he stayed five years (first year RedShirt, out for injury). He’s always averaged around the double figures. Out of college in 2003-04, he did not find a contract and stayed out of action for two years. Find a job and minutes in Italy’s Lega2, very limited influence in the division above.
EVALUATION: Interesting player, with a valuable Italian passport, he’s certain to have a long career in Italy. He will never be a star and he will never make it to the top European leagues but overall he’s solid and reliable. He makes himself useful as an undersized 5 with his intensity and his capacity to score points near the basket. Main drawback: rebounding.
