SLJIVANCANIN, Mladjen
STRENGTHS: Versatile, he can play any outside position. He has the fundamentals of a guard, the size of a forward and he’s sometimes used as a point-guard. Disciplined and intelligent, he doesn’t force the issue. Good understanding of the game, be that as a scorer or organiser. Excellent shooter, excellent mechanic, he can hit the pull up jumper. He can score with drives and runners. Good defensive mentality.
WEAKNESSES: He lacks athleticism to defend on guards. He lacks lateral mobility on defense, he uses his technique but he struggles to move his feet. He needs to be inserted in a rigid offensive system. He neither has the talent nor the mentality to improvise and, as a dribbler, he struggles against the defensive pressure and when he has to dribble in traffic. Not a big scorer.
CAREER: Born in Belgrade, he took part in the European Championships U16 in 2001 with the Serbian national team (2.9ppg). His first meaningful season was at Spartak Subotica, averaging 8.7ppg in 2003-04. The following season he moved to Frankfurt, Germany, where he took advantage of the many injuries and consequent playing time to do well. He signed in Koln half way through the 2005-06 season, but he did not shine in his year and a half there. Worse at Crvena Zvezda. Bit of a revival in Samara and then in Cyprus.
EVALUATION: Just a decent player in the German league, where his athletic limitations are hidden in the type of basketball played in the BBL. He knows what he has to do on court. Considering his rather young age, he shows a surprising understanding of the situations (patience, discipline), with or without the ball in hand. The talent is not unlimited, he does not have huge margin for improvement.
