ANTELO, Jose Angel
BORN: 1987
PASS: ESP
HT: 6-8
Role: 4
Stats 10-11: Caceres 2016 (SPA Leb) 13 Gm 21.2 Min 5.3 Tr 0.2 As 10.5 Pts 1.17 Oer Past teams: Real Madrid, Caceres, Zaragozza
STRENGTHS: Tall forward with long arms. Despite his young age, he’s one of the best rebounders in Europe. He always seems to know in which direction the ball is going to bounce. He often scores on put-backs. Intelligent, he has a feel for the game. Has a good personality. A good face-up player as he can use his excellent dribbling ability.
WEAKNESSES: He’s having trouble in reproducing what he showed at junior level with the pros. He lacks talent, physical and athletic ability to step up a level. He has to develop his perimeter game. He has a slow first step and his three-point shot is unreliable (Bad mechanics). He’s not comfortable when physical contact occurs inside (body control) and he’s not a great leaper.
CAREER: Born in Santiago di Compostela, he came up in Real Madrid’s youth program. He made his debut in the ACB and in the European competitions in Madrid. However, he made his first meaningful appearances in the LEB, first at Caceres and then at Zaragoza where he played his first season with responsibility. Starred at the European Championships Under 18 in 2005 with 21.4ppg and 13.8rpg. After a season at Bilbao, he tried to get going in the lower division, first at Hospitalet and Tenerife, where he did fine. However, he could not earn more than 10 minutes of playing time as he had another go in the ACB with Fuenlabrada. Back at Caceres.
EVALUATION: He dominated at junior level. In the best European league, he did very little as doubts about his margin of improvement emerged. He has not improved much his technique and his instinct for the game might not be enough to make up for a sub-par athletic and physical capacity. A natural born rebounder. Has a good behaviour.
