NEWSON, Jared
STRENGTHS: Small forward with exceptional athleticism. Good size, quick in the open court, explosive first step and great leaping ability. He plays with will and a good attitude. He likes to run into the spaces. At his best in athletic situations. He drives in when he has space with his right hand. He can work his way to the basket inside to shoot on top of his opponent. He can score points and give a hand on the boards.
WEAKNESSES: Technically average. He lacks experience at the top level, and that shows in his decision making and court vision. Must improve on his passing and dribbling skills. Poor shooter: low percentages and shooting selection. His first step is not effective and that’s why he finds it difficult in 1-on-1 situations. He needs to be fed on the move. More quantity than quality.
CAREER: He came out of the little NCAA college of Tennesee-Martin, in the good conference of Ohio Valley. Voted in the all-first team of the OVC in his senior year, as he averaged good stats (never been under the 14.4ppg in the NCAA). Called to take part in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, he averaged 7.3ppg and had a taste of the NBA with the summer league. Did very well in his debut year in Europe, in Germany, where he came back after a spell in Australia, but he was not as convincing on a bigger team. Went to Finland to get his career on track after an average NBDL season.
EVALUATION: A player with athletic potential. He has to work on just about every aspect of his game to have an impact in good European leagues. For now, his game is made of big athletic plays but lacking in quality. In his college years, his three-point shooting was one of his positive characteristics, it has become a weakness, idem for the instinct for the game. Appreciated attitude.
