MASONI, Filippo
STRENGTHS: Guard with great competitive spirit. He gives his contribution coming off the bench, appreciated mentality: he’s humble, he’s ready to do his part and he’s happy with what he gets on offense. Physically solid, he can either guard a 1, 2 or 3. On offense, he can give a hand bringing the ball up court or pushing it up on the break. However, he’s at his best in his half court, where he’s focused and he’s a threat for steals.
WEAKNESSES: He has very little talent, he’s not always composed and sometimes fails to realise he overdoes it on offense. He’s short for a guard, he’s not a great athlete, he accelerates with power but he lacks explosiveness, quickness and body control. Little impact on offense, below average fundamentals (dribbling and passing skills, court vision) and shooting ability. Constantly low percentages.
CAREER: He came up in Reggio Emilia’s youth ranks, he’s never obtained playing time in the first team and played for a long time in the lower divisions. He played in Serie C (5th division) at Castelnovo, then he made it to the Serie B before eventually playing professionally. Good season, with decent numbers helping Castelletto to miraculously stay up. Found minutes and responsibility in Imola in 2009-10 and 2009-10 after three years in Italy’s second division with limited impact.
EVALUATION: Player with great heart, he does an awful lot of dirty work. He had an impact in his first season in the Lega2, with his will making up for the lack of technique. Might be a bit overestimated because of the stats, his main problem is that he does not seem to be aware of his limits, especially as a shooter. His (little) upside depends precisely on this: his shooting.
