Raul LOPEZ
LOPEZ, Raul
STRENGTHS: Classy and talented point-guard. Extraordinarily clever tactically, he’s a true leader he guides the team and he’s reliable in clutch time. Old-fashioned point-guard who thinks first to create for his teammates, but without forgetting to take responsibility when required. Excellent dribbling, passing skills and court vision. Great three-point shooter. WEAKNESSES: His main problem is his lack of athleticism. He plays a solid basketball but not especially creative. He needs a disciplined system in order to put his qualities in evidence. He’s not very quick, he lacks explosiveness. The many injuries he suffered took their toll. He’s better at shooting than driving. He’s not a big scorer. CAREER: He emerged very young with Badalona. He already averaged double figures when he was only 20 and took part at the Olympic Games in Sydney (after being a star in the junior national team). Madrid signed him. He was picked in the first round of the NBA draft in 2001. From then on, he had a nightmare period with his knee injuries who kept him out for a long time. Average in the NBA before coming back to Spain and Girona. Back in Real Madrid from 2006 to 2009 before joining Khimki. EVALUATION: Came back in Europe after his troubled NBA years. He is an old-fashioned point-guard, a thinker of the game with great technique. He fits in perfectly in teams with en extended bench like Real Madrid where he does not have to be the star but where he’s asked to put his teammates in the rhythm and show character in the clutch time, and he’s one of the best at that in Europe. He has not the legs anymore and the mentality to be the star of the team.
