The Euroleague Top 16 reached its halfway point, allowing the teams to stop and take inventory of the races to reach the playoffs and beyond. Three teams are smiling wider than the rest, defending champion Regal FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Fenerbahce Ulker, all of whom are undefeated through three Top 16 games. But anything is still possible at this point, especially in Group E after Thursday’s results. Caja Laboral defeated Panathinaikos 77-70, handing the Greens their first Top 16 loss and joining them atop the standings at 2-1. Fernando San Emeterio scored 21 to pace the Spanish champs, who will try to move ahead of the Greek champs when they next meet in Athens. Unicaja rallied past Lietuvos Rytas 98-91 as Nedzad Sinanovic paced seven Unicaja scorers in double figures with 15 points and 8 rebounds in the last 12 minutes of the game. Unicaja grabbed its first win and equalled L. Rytas for third in that group at 1-2. Two teams separated themselves from the rest in Group F with big wins. In Thursday’s opener, Maccabi Electra crushed Union Olimpija 104-67 as Jeremy Pargo scored a season-high 21 points and Lior Eliyahu tied a Euroleague mark by going 10-for-10 from the field. Later Regal FC Barcelona routed Lottomatica Roma 80-56 to stay perfect and extend its Top 16 home court winning streak to 14 games. Alan Anderson scored 16 to pace the champs, who could claim a playoff berth with a win in their next game, depending on other results. In Group G, Real Madrid topped Efes Pilsen 89-86 after overtime to get to 3-0. Clay Tucker scored a season-high 19 points and D’Or Fischer posted a double-double to pace the victors. Meanwhile the Game of the Week went to the Italian champs as Montepaschi Siena beat Partizan mt:s 58-66 at Belgrade Arena. Andrea Michelori led Siena with 15 points off the bench. Two teams have a leg up on the competition in Group H after respective home wins on Wednesday. Fenerbahce Ulker held off Zalgiris 80-72 as Oguz Savas and Marko Tomas scored 15 each and Mirsad Turkcan posted a double-double. The win lifted the Turkish champs to 3-0. Later Olympiacos downed Power Electronics Valencia 77-62 led by Rasho Nesterovic with 17 points. That group could be solved by Top 16, Week 4. If FB Ulker and the Reds both win on the road against the same opponents, they will clinch Quarterfinal Playoffs berths. Now all teams have a week off to regroup – though many will be busy in their domestic competitions.
