Traditional Euroleague power houses Caja Laboral and Panathinaikos marched into the Quarterfinal Playoffs with road victories on Thursday joined by first-timer Power Electronics Valencia as the Top 16 finished with another exciting set of finales. The four Quarterfinal Playoffs series are set with four exciting matchups that will begin on March 21: Group E winner Laboral will face Group F runner-up Maccabi Electra; Group F winner Regal FC Barcelona meets Group E runner-up Panathinaikos; Group G champ Real Madrid takes on Group H runner-up Power Electronics and Group H champ Olympiacos goes against Group H runner-up Montepaschi Siena. The Group E picture was completely settled Thursday with a pair of road wins. Panathinaikos bested Unicaja 61-77 to grab second place in the group with a 2-2 record as Drew Nicholas matched his season high with 18 points. The only other game with playoff implications was in Group G, where Power Electronics KO’d Fenerbahce Ulker 82-68 as Robertas Javtokas and Nando De Colo registered 15 points apiece. Valencia improved to 3-3 and advanced over FB Ulker on a tiebreaker. Rasho Nesterovic came through with 20 points as Olympiacos dumped Zalgiris 78-64 for its fifth win in a row. The Reds won Group G at 5-1. The Top 16’s only undefeated team is the reigning Euroleague champ: Group F winner Barcelona beat Union Olimpija 76-58 as Jaka Lakovic returned to form with 12 points in his third start of the season. Also in Group F, Lottomatica Roma routed Maccabi Electra 82-69 to finish the season on a high note. Gigi Datome had 14 points and 10 rebound s for his first career double-double to lead the winners. Montepaschi Siena stunned Real Madrid 77-95 in a Group G matchup of playoff teams. Malik Hairston and Pietro Aradori scored season highs of 17 and 16 points, respectively, for the Italian champs. Partizan mt:s edged Efes Pilsen 65-67 in Istanbul to avoid finishing the Top 16 without a win. Jan Vesely chalked up his best game of the season with 23 points and 6 rebounds for the Serbian champs. Now the eight survivors have two weeks to prepare before the pressure hits hard as the Quarterfinal Playoffs arrive and the battle to reach Barcelona heats up.
