Jeff HORNER
HORNER, Jeff
STRENGTHS: Can play 1 or 2. A leader. Tough, he overcomes his limits thanks to his abnegation, courage and intelligence. Old-fashioned fundamentals, he protects the ball well and he’s an excellent passer with technique and court vision. No-nonsense player. A threat on the Pick & Rolls because he reads the game well and when he’s given space, he’s a lethal shooter (his main strength). Useful on the boards and on loose balls. WEAKNESSES: Has little natural talent. Has to play constantly at the maximum of his possibility. Athletically average: he lacks quickness, leaping ability and lateral mobility (1-on-1 defense?). As a point-guard, he’s very disciplined and reliable but he sometimes struggles against aggressive defense, which shows ball-handling ability that must be improved. Not a great threat off the dribble or with drives. CAREER: From the Midwest, he was Mr Basketball of the Iowa in his senior year. He also played for the college of his state with the Cyclones. He had three seasons over the 13.5ppg and was voted twice in the third ideal starting five of the prestigious Big Ten conference. As a senior, he won his conference and was MVP. Invited at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in 2006, he failed to impress. 9.7pts and 3.1ass in his first European season at Bree, Belgium. Has not impressed in Europe so far. EVALUATION: Old-fashioned player, typical of the Iowa with character and personality. Exceptional three-point shot with extremely quick release. However, he has little talent and does not create much off the dribble. In Europe, he would have the size to play guard and become an interesting shooting specialist. He knows what he has to do on court and has solid fundamentals but things have not worked out for him so far.
