BOWLER, John
STRENGTHS: Center with height and powerful body frame. He has size and he makes good use of his body around the basket. Excellent attitude, he plays with intensity, plays hard on the contacts, cunning considering his age. An overachiever. He can play in either paints. He has an old-fashioned technique from the post. Good footwork, uses hooks and can hit it face-up. Vigorous on the rebound, good positioning.
WEAKNESSES: He gets the maximum out of his really limited talent. Dynamic but poor athlete, he lacks quickness. Slow feet, not reactive, he does not have leaping ability. Rigid, he’s not much of a threat in 1-on-1 situations from a standstill, he struggles to shoot in traffic. He will never have high percentages. On defense and on the rebounds, he struggles because of his physical and athletic limitations.
CAREER: He came out of a little college of an average conference in the NCAA. He did nonetheless very well in Eastern Michigan, especially in his senior year when he was voted in the all-first team of his conference. He had averaged double figures as a sophomore and junior. He took part in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and averaged 8rpg. He played his first four European years in Bonn, Germany, and moved to Ludwigsburg in summer 2010 as his stats and court time was diminishing.
EVALUATION: He plays with great heart but with little talent. He proved he could do well in leagues like the German BBL, which is perfect for his technical and physical characteristics. There, he can make his fighting spirit and old-fashioned technique count. Good understanding of his position, he’s mature and clever. The margin for improvement is almost nil.
