Will MCDONALD
McDONALD, Will
STRENGTHS: Modern frontline player. He can play as a center. He is quick and dynamic. He can be a threat on offense thanks to his excellent athleticism. He’s tall and has long arms. He runs the court fast and possesses a good footwork near the basket, where he has various moves. He is agile on the low post, receives the ball well on the move (Pick & Rolls). Has a nice little shot facing the basket. WEAKNESSES: Body is a bit light to play as a center. Besides, he does not make up for it with fighting spirit. On defense, he performs a lot better as a 4 than 5. He struggles against physical players. Average rebounder. Does not like to sacrifice and put the body in the way as a help defender. He needs to play alongside another frontline player who leaves him the paint free so he can play around the basket and who does the dirty work for him. CAREER: He came out of South Florida College, where he did well but without receiving the acknowledgement as this was not a big college. His first year in Europe was filled with ups and downs but he still put up some good numbers (13.8ppg, 7.8rpg). He moved to Gran Canaria where he finished in crescendo. He stepped up another level when he broke out at Estudiantes, especially as a scorer (17.4ppg). Played Euroleague basketball with Vitoria before going back to his old club, Granca, and then DKV. EVALUATION: A frontline player who kept improving all the time. Beyond the stats, he is an interesting player because he is willing to progress. He’s very dynamic, he runs, jumps. In the right open system and in the right tactical context, he can be a factor. He is neither a fighter nor a leader but when he gains confidence, he becomes more involved, physically as well. Is he better as a little star in a lesser team or as a role player in an ambitious team?
