The Euroleague's defending champion, Regal FC Barcelona, announced Wednesday a contract extension that will keep coach Xavi Pascual at the head of the team's bench through the end of the 2012-13 season. The two-year extension was added to Pascual's current deal, which was due to expire at the end of the season. Pascual, 38, led Barcelona to its second Euroleague crown last season with one of the most dominant modern performances in the competition. Barcelona's 20-2 final record was the highest winning percentage of any Euroleague champ all decade. Those 20 victories came by an average margin of 14.8 points. And Barcelona was just the third team since the Final Four era began in 1988 to win both their semi-final and title games by double-digits. After the season, Pascual was honored with the Euroleague's Aleksandar Gomelskiy Coach of the Year award. Since taking over the Barcelona bench less than three years ago, on February 14, 2008, Pascual has also won the 2009 Spanish League and 2010 Spanish Cup titles. Before joining the club as an assistant coach in 2005, Pascual had been a head coach at lower-division teams Aracena and Olesa, among others, in Spain.
