One game on Wednesday made sure that at least two playoff tickets will be up for grab in the final week of Top 16 action. Though Top 16 Week 5 is dominated by six contests on Thursday, Wednesday’s games delivered plenty of excitement. In the opener, Lietuvos Rytas stunned Panathinaikos 67-68 on a pair of Khalid El-Amin free throws with 3.1 seconds left to infuse plenty of drama into Group E. The Lithuanian champs matched the Greek champs atop the group at 3-2. On Thursday Caja Laboral (2-2) hosts Unicaja (1-3) at 20:30 CET and if the hosts win, there will be a three-way tie atop the standings, while if the visitors win, all four teams will be in the playoff hunt. Rytas hosts Caja Laboral next week in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Game of the Week, while Panathinaikos visits Unicaja. In Wednesday’s second game, Lottomatica Roma bested Olimpija 76-87 in Group F for its first win of the Top 16 and snapping a five-game losing streak in the Euroleague. Nihad Djedovic scored 20 and grabbed 4 steals to lead the winners. That group awaits a major showdown on Thursday as Maccabi Electra (3-1) takes on Regal FC Barcelona (4-0) at 20:00 CET in a battle for group supremacy. Thursday action begins with Group H and Zalgiris (1-3) vs. Power Electronics Valencia (1-3) at 18:45 in a survival test for both teams, although even the winner could find itself eliminated depending on the next game, Fenerbahce Ulker (3-1) vs. Olympiacos (3-1), which starts 30 minutes later. In that game, the winner advances for sure, and may clinch first place, but so could the loser reach the playoffs. The only other undefeated Top 16 team left, Real Madrid (4-0) visits Partizan mt:s Belgrade (0-4) at 20:45 looking to clinch Group G's first place with another victory. Meanwhile, Montepaschi Siena (2-2) hosts Efes Pilsen (2-2) in a Game of the Week battle that will almost surely make one of them Group G's second playoff qualifier.
