Ventspils leads the Baltic League standings with a 16-4 record. VEF Riga is second at 15-5 and four other teams - Rudupis, Rock, Siauliai and Nevezis - have qualified to the next round along with Zalgiris and Lietuvos Rytas. It was a bittersweet week for VEF, that downed difficult Nevezis 74-82 on the road on Tuesday. Art Parahouski paced the winners with 19 points. Dairis Bertans added 18 while Gatis Jahovics had 10 for VEF, that trailed 46-40 at halftime. Outstanding defense allowed VEF to get a 52-59 edge after 30 minutes and kept a safe margin until the final buzzer. VEF registered a 109-105 double-overtime road loss against Kalev/Cramo. Rait Keerles led the winners with 24 points. Parahouski and Trevon Hughes each had 17 points for VEF, Sandis Valters added 15, Kaspars Berzins had 14, Bojan Bakic 12, Ivan Nelyubov 11 and Bertans 10. VEF rallied from a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, 86-86, on a big triple by Valters, who committed a key turnover late in the first overtime. Free throws by Gert Dorbek and Tanel Sokk sealed the outcome down the stretch. In other games, Dolphins edged Valmiera 88-83, Rock knocked off Kalev/Cramo 55-64 while Ventspils thrashed Liepajas Lauvas 95-77 behind 30 points from Oritseweyimi Efejuku.
