ADAMS, Tommy
STRENGTHS: Combo guard. Mentality of the scorer, he believes in his capacity, has personality and the attributes to take responsibility in key moments. Solid body structure, he drives in traffic, does not get pushed out when contacts occur, he can accelerate with power. A shooter: from three, coming off the screens, catch and shoot, off the dribble. Excellent body control. Intelligent, he does a good job of driving on the Pick & Rolls and kicking it out.
WEAKNESSES: He’s not a great athlete. First step to drive in is slow, he needs a couple of dribble to drive past his defender. Limited talent, could he play against the players of a level above? Shooting selection is typical of the scorer, he sometimes forces the issue and the percentages are not brilliant. Energy level and defensive consistency are suspect. As a point-guard, he does not give much rhythm to the offense. He’s better as a 2.
CAREER: He came out of an average college, he was voted player of the year of his conference in his senior year nearing 20ppg. Invited at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament but he did not draw the attention of the NBA. Almost inactive in his first pro year, he had two other seasons without much success in the CBA. Then he was one of the best players of the Sweden league. Built his reputation between Germany and Poland. Was a star in Italy’s second division with Jesi in 2009-10.
EVALUATION: He’s making giant strides forward. He had not been convincing until he arrived in Germany, where he established himself as one of the top scorers. He certainly knows how to score the basket: from three, with powerful drives, occasionally on the open court. His personality and attributes are most appreciated. However, there are doubts on his ability to step up a level. Besides, the team might have to adapt to his characteristics on offense.
